History of Kriya Yoga and Shiva Gorakshanath Babaji
I’m going to devote this blog entirely to Gorakshnath or Gorakhnath who is the unquestioned Guru of Hatha Yoga. The Information I have gathered and am putting it down is for those interested in learning and practicing Kriya and those who are in pursuit of more information and knowledge in this subject. Many of my students have questioned me about the History of Kriya Yoga from time to time. Various informations are available on this subject and I have respect for all. I collected and gathered this information on the origin of Kriya Yoga from various sources including a lot from my Satguru Yogiraj Siddhanath at His Sinhagarh Ashram in Pune and during his spiritual discourses.
Who is Shiva Gorakshanath Babaji
Gorakh Shaivism is considered to be a lineage of the earlier ascetic orders of India. Gorakshnath Babaji or Gorakhnath Babaji most likely lived in the tenth century, the same time as the Pasupats or Pashupatas (200 AD). He was a disciple of the Spiritual Guide Matsyendranath, patron saint of Nepal, who the adherents of Babaji say learnt the truth directly from Lord Shiva, Adinath, and then passed it on to Gorakshnath Babaji.
Gorakshnath Babaji mastered the highly occult Nath Yoga sciences under the tutelage of his Guru Matsyendranath, and he worshipped Lord Shiva in temples across Assam and Kashmir and is believed to have travelled to the Southern Parts of India. He wrote the Siddha Siddhanta Paddhati, a treatise on the Natha Philosophy, as he had entered the deepest of Samadhi during his earth life.
Kriya Yoga is beyond religious boundary
Throughout the history of Kriya Yoga the followers of Gorakshnath and siddha yogis perceived the human’s inner and outer body as Shiva’s Cosmic body which is continuous blossoming forth as Shakti (power) and believed that all mind and matter and divinity present are Shiva manifest.
These joyous temple and masjid visiting pilgrim yogis danced their way in their saffron robes, foreheads white with holy ash, large circular earrings, and rudraksha beads with a unique horn whistle on a hair cord around their neck.
Their daily focus was on internal worship and kundalini yoga and they sought realisation on the transcendent state of Shiva. They did not believe that Kriya yoga had a religion and many Muslims joined them and many Muslim Pirs head Babaji’s monasteries.
Meeting Babaji
In the first chapter of the book ‘Wings to Freedom’ (an excellent book for all the seekers of Kriya Yoga), Yogiraj Satgurunath Siddhanath, my Kriya Guru, mentions meeting Shiva Gorakshanth Babaji at the confluence of river Mandakini and river Alaknanda. He was then 27-year-old and while meditating Gurunath saw an Aurora Borealis light and experienced the Master Supreme Self whom he calls – The Sage of the Mist, the King of Kings, Shiva Gorakshanath Babaji.
